Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+19
Severity: grave
Tags: d-i
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

After i upgraded my software pacage and the system from stretch to buster I can not start the x-server anymore.
When booting in normal mode the system hangs after outputting a few lines about an achi operator problem and notifiing me that linux is clear. I can not input anything, but the cursor blinks.
When i boot in resque mode, my laptop( x1 carbon) behaves quite normal. I can login and connect to internet via cable. But once I enter startx or xinit, the computer hangs again.

Thank you

Hi,

same here, after upgrade to buster no X anymore. Normal start works, but
ends at terminal login. Manual startx makes the screen flicker briefly,
then back to terminal. X log contain no errors (EE).

Downgrade to stretch didn't change the situation in any way. Going back
from linux 4.13 to 4.8 had no effect either.

During downgrade gconf2 choked (triggers hung and never completed). During
upgrade I think I saw some gconf error message too, but I cannot find a
trace of them anywhere.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Update:

I stopped the gdm3 service and started a freshly installed slim login
manager. I comes right up, no issues.

Starting the GNOME session from slim, however, results in immediate
failure. This is syslog from the last message of slim to the X server
shutdown:

Looking into possible known issues for at-spi or gnome-terminal-server
did not bring up anything useful for me.

FTR: Installing xfce4 or kde both gives me a working desktop. So this
might actually be a GNOME issue rather than an X issue, or an
interaction of the two.

Package: xserver-xorg
Followup-For: Bug #879624

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

* What led up to the situation?
I have an Acer Aspire One D270. Graphics driver was a problem from the
beginning but after sometime in 2013, the problems went away and the
laptop functioned smoothly. I use a stripped down version of the Debian
testing OS without any display-manager. I log into the console and use startx
to start an Xmonad session.

Everything was fine till linux kernel 4.13. Two weeks back, I upgraded
to linux kernel 4.14.0-3. I cannot make X work under the new kernel. It
works fine with the old kernel.

In the new kernel, I get till the console login screen. Everything
works fine in the console. However, as soon I run startx, the screen
goes black with the backlight at its brightest. Nothing comes on the
screen. Trying to switch to console useing Ctrl-Alt-Fn doesn't work for
any n=2,3,4,5,6. The only way is to reboot. I use Ctrl-Alt-F2 followed
by Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
I created an /etc/X11/xorg.conf using Xorg -configure. It crashed
but it created an xorg.conf.new nevertheless. I manually
set the driver to "modesetting".

* What was the outcome of this action?
It works sometimes after a lot of reboots. But not always. I cannot
figure out if there is some pattern as the number of times it works is
very few compared to the number of times it doesn't work.

Control: severity -1 important
Control: tag -1 + moreinfo

I looked through this bug during the Bern Bug Squashing Party, and
although I'm not in the xorg team, my impression is that the bug is
not actionable in the current state.
The individual messages hint at problems that might be related to the
kernel, to GNOME, or maybe to xorg but with the available information
that's hard to say.

I suggest that the participants try to use one of the support
channels mentioned at https://www.debian.org/support to get help in
narrowing down the problem.

I'm quite sure the bug severity is inflated, as xorg works for many
users without any issues; I'm lowering the severity for now.

Cheers,
gregor
